Tailored materiality Research

Tailored Materiality Research focuses on the relationship between geometry, design, fabrication, and construction. The group develops lightweight flexible (formwork) construction systems that promote efficient use of material in the design and construction of complex (concrete) structures.

This includes using structural principles to create sound and appealing designs through form-finding techniques. The group also develops computational tools and pipelines that reliably encode physical material behavior during fabrication, combining various digital manufacturing technologies.

These developments have been showcased through examples such as the KnitNervi pavilion as part of the Technoscape exhibition at the MAXXI museum in Rome between October 2022 and April 2023 and the Common Thread installation at the Brugge Triennale between April 2024 and September 2024.
